Underwriting Associate (Hybrid)

Position Overview: The Underwriter is responsible for working alongside Account Teams on assigned cases, providing financial analysis and utilizing appropriate tools to evaluate benefit programs. This position plays a key part in marketing required for plan design, carrier selection and proposal presentations for small sized groups.

Work Arrangement: This is a full-time hybrid position supporting our office located at 325 Chesnut Street Suite 1000, Philadelphia, PA.

Professional Responsibilities:

  • Performs underwriting and financial support for internal consulting teams and their respective clients with employees under 50 benefit eligible
  • Prepares plan design and financial analysis for existing and prospective clients by utilizing modeling tools and various reporting techniques
  • Responsible for clients’ benefits marketing process, such as: data acquisition, request for proposal (RFP) preparation, vendor question resolution, proposal review and analysis, and client exhibit and presentation preparation
  • Performs the analysis and negotiation of rates and plan options with insurers on behalf of clients to secure optimal, cost-competitive benefit plans
  • Provides recommendations and options to consulting team based on the evaluation and determination of alternative coverage, pricing options, and plan design changes related to client goals
  • Assists with various reporting for plan change evaluations, budget calculations, and other on-going reviews
  • Participates in special underwriting projects as needed
  • Maintains quality service standards and organization to assure timely service to team
  • Attends relevant workshops as necessary to maintain professional knowledge and licensure
  • Adheres to all applicable confidentiality and data security guidelines and ensures the appropriate handling of sensitive information
  • Facilitates and attends relevant staff meetings to promote communication and execution of goals
  • Completes special projects specific to the function of the department/team or as needed for the department
  • Other duties as assigned within the scope of position expectations

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Risk Management, Insurance, Actuary, Mathematics and/or other related field is required
  • 1-2 years of experience, including internship experience
  • Must obtain a Health/Life license within 3 months of hire and complete required certification hours to maintain licensure
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Excel (Data tables, Data manipulation, Formula creation), Word, and PowerPoint
  • Effective analytical, math and problem-solving skills, sound judgment, strong decision-making ability, confidence to make difficult decisions and excellent communication skills
  • Evidence of having an exacting attention to detail and strong organizational skills
  • Strong time-management skills and ability to prioritize workload and responsibilities to meet deadlines
  • Qualified candidates must demonstrate intermediate knowledge of:
    • Insurance products, all lines
    • Bid preparation, analysis, and carrier negotiations
    • Funding arrangements
    • Claim analysis
    • Marketplace familiarity
    • Benchmarks
  • This position requires subject matter expertise in: Health Care Reform, Consumer Driven Health Plans, and alternative funding strategies
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; strong oral and written communications skills
  • Because of the nature of underwriting work, time commitments may vary, especially during the peak seasons—incumbent must be able to work variable hours including occasional evening and weekend work to meet deadlines
  • Ability to be flexible with job duties and scope of work
  • Authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship
